Festa della Repubblica al Monte dei Cappuccini

Last week we decided to make use of a Friday at home with the kids, courtesy of an Italian national holiday, to tear the kids away from their ipads for a couple of hours and take them on a long uphill hike to the top a small hill from which one can get a panoramic view of the city - and on a good day, a great view of the Alps too, but this was not that kind of day.  The hike is not that long really (Google tells me it is a 700m walk from the nearest bus stop) but I told the kids it would be, in order to limit the amount of complaints I would receive later.

I think that the most tiring part of the trip was waiting for buses on a day with reduced service, but the uphill walk still drew the most vocal moans. Fortunately it wasn't sunny and in fact it rained a bit on our way up, which I took as a good thing, but not everyone agreed.

On a good note, the older brothers did try to encourage their sister. I overheard them telling a story of how we were all on a mission to defeat the Wizard of Steepness on top of the hill.

Here you can see the happy hikers admiring the view before tackling the last few meters of our ascent.

And this is where the Wizard of Steepness lives, apparently.

A disappointing panoramic view I tried to capture with my phone,

and here are the victorious heros celebrating the downfall of the Wizard.

We spent a short time looking at view and keeping the kids alive and all in one piece,

and then we headed down on a different path,

to end our walk at the Church of the Great Mother of God (where the kids tried to crash someone's wedding).

This is where we should have declared victory and just gone home, but hubris led us to want to top it all off with ice cream from Fiorio.

There was seriously good mango ice cream, according to one of our testers,

but was it good enough to justify missing the last bus running on schedule?

After that we had to spend about an hour waiting around the bus stop. It turned out that a march in the center of the city had unexpectedly disrupted the bus routes. The pictures below might deceive you into thinking that the kids waited stoically for the bus without causing trouble, but that is most definitely not what they did.

Still, the long wait allowed me to take a few more pictures, and I am especially happy with this series of snaps of Lila sitting on her special pyramid (this is how I sold it to her when she refused to sit on an uncomfortable stone after I was too tired to keep carrying her).

This is my Lila!

And so evening fell on our poorly timed attempt to return home,

but since we were waiting for the bus right in front of a rosticceria I at least grabbed the chance to buy a roasted chicken (pollo allo spiedo), which made for a satisfying dinner when we finally made it back home.

The Money Rat Was Here

Rajiv has lost his first tooth yesterday. I think mom and dad are even more excited than he is - at least I am, for sure. The first tooth! That makes him almost a grown up, right? Well, Rajiv would be quick to agree on this :)

It is one of the bottom front teeth, not so easy to show in a photo. We tried a couple of poses, yesterday night:

and again today morning:

but I'm afraid we will have to wait for one of the upper teeth to go if we want the classic toothless shot.

Rajiv and Rohan have heard of the Tooth Fairy from American books and movies, but I grew up with the "Little Mouse of the Teeth" (literally translated from the Italian "Topino dei Denti") and I told them about this a few days ago, when Rajiv's tooth started to wiggle. It might sound ridiculous, but I don't feel good lying to them about this sort of things, so I just told them that this was a story my aunt and grandmother told me, never saying it was a true story. The thing is: kids are eager to believe in gift bearing magical creatures and there is no need to push the idea, they will right away embrace it, even when they know that it really doesn't make much sense.

This is the compromise I have worked out for now so that they don't have to grow up without Santa and the old Befana just because I have a problem with encouraging uncritical faith in the supernatural :)

Anyway, what I was told as a child was that if I put my tooth, all wrapped up in aluminum foil, in a corner of the kitchen floor, at night a mouse would come to take it and leave a little bit of money for me in exchange. This is supposed to be a gentle little mouse, the kind that you might not mind too much having around your house at night, but for some reason the kids have decide to call it the Money Rat. Not as charming as the original, in my opinion. More changes: we wrapped the tooth in colorful paper instead of foil and Rajiv insisted in keeping the little packet under his pillow, which would make more sense for the Tooth Fairy, I guess, but is really not the natural place for a mouse to go and look - at least we would hope.

In spite of all these changes, as it turns out, the Money Rat showed up. He took the tooth and left another little packet under Rajiv's pillow, wrapped in paper of a different color. The same kind of paper we used too! Inside the paper was 100 rupees bill. The rat was very generous, maybe because it was a first tooth, which is very special.

A tale of three continents

Un sacco di foto che documentano il nostro percorso dall'India verso il Canada a fine giugno.

...

I have some cute photos from our last days in India and then our stay in Brussels and Torino on the way to Canada. All of this happened about three months ago, but "better late than never" should be the official title of this blog.

But first, a disclaimer:

It might appear that Rajiv is always wearing the same clothes in these photos. In fact, he is. He has strong opinions about what looks good on him and purple or stripes are his favorite. However, we do wash his clothes, occasionally, if he allows it.

Here we go:

June 19th 2010 - dinner at Kuttamama's house

June 20th 2010 - Rohan's birthday party at Vanilla Place (these were mostly taken by Anu)

June 23rd - Brussels, Emiliano's home after a long long trip

June 24th 2010 - at the playground near my place in torino

September 30th - very early morning in Torino getting ready to catch our flight

June 30th - in Brussels with Emiliano again - some people very tired, some people not so much

And then the day after we left Europe and finally reached home here in Waterloo.

The end.
